Cannon Trident Connectors - Product Safety Information
Electrical connectors generally do not contain hazardous materials. They are composed of conducting and non-conducting materials, categorized into two main groups: printed circuit and low-cost audio types with plastic insulators and casings, and rugged, fire barrier, and high reliability types with metal casings and various insulating materials (rubber, plastic, glass). Contact materials vary by connector type and application, typically including copper, copper alloys, nickel, alumel, chromel, or steel, with other alloys specified for special applications.
When correctly wired and used within specified parameters, connectors pose no fire hazard. However, incorrect wiring, assembly, careless use of metal tools or conductive fluids, or transit damage can lead to electric shock or burns. Live circuits should not be broken by separating mated connectors to avoid arcing and ionization. Heat dissipation is greater at maximum resistance; local overheating can occur due to damage (cracked contacts, broken wire strands), incorrect application tools, poor soldering, or slack terminals. Exceeding product data sheet ratings can cause insulation breakdown and electric shock. Continued overheating intensifies resistance through loss of temper in spring contacts, oxide film formation, and carbonization of insulation, potentially leading to fire and noxious fumes. Overheating may not be visually apparent, and burns can result from touching overheated components.
Care must be taken to avoid damaging connector components during installation and use. While generally free of sharp edges, handling certain components requires caution to prevent injury. Connectors may be damaged in transit, creating hazards; therefore, products should be inspected before installation and rejected if found damaged.
Disposal of certain materials via incineration may release noxious or toxic fumes.
Connectors with exposed contacts should not be used on the current supply side of an electrical circuit to prevent electric shock from touching exposed contacts on an unmated connector. Voltages exceeding 30 Vac or 42.5V dc are potentially hazardous. Ensure such voltages cannot be transmitted to exposed metal parts of the connector body. Before energizing, check the connector and wiring for damage to metal parts or insulators, solder blobs, loose strands, conducting lubricants, swarf, or other undesired conducting particles. Perform circuit resistance and continuity checks to ensure no high resistance joints or spurious conducting paths exist. Always use the correct application tools as specified in the Data Sheet/Catalog. Untrained personnel should not wire, assemble, or tamper with connectors. Refer to applicable national regulations for operating voltage.
